DRIPSENSE INFUSION MONITOR TEAM 2023

Dripsense Infusion Monitor is an automated infusion monitoring device, tailored to work with Infusion treatment(IV treatment). Infusion treatment is where fluids such as medication, blood, and nutrients have to be injected directly into the blood stream. This device is clamped on an infusion treatment set, and it monitors, measures, and sets the different infusion system parameters such as drop rate, and amount of fluid infused. Dripsense comes equipped with an alarm/alert system that notifies medical personnel for any anomalies such as deviation from set parameters, faults such as blockages in the infusion line, and blood backflow. It also notifies medical personnel about complete infusion.

Dripsense infusion monitor allows one medical personnel to monitor several infusion treatments at once, further improving workflow efficiency in medical centers by countering the effects of very low medical personnel to patient ratios.

This team is led by Nassejje Mary Anthony, a young fourth year Biomedical Engineering student at Mbarara University of Science and Technology.

SUKALICARE TEAM 2023

Sukali Care kit ( Non Invasive Continuous Glucose Monitor, Insulin Pump and mobile application). The non-invasive continuous glucose monitor(CGM) will be in the form of a bracelet that uses infrared light(painless) to take a blood glucose reading without the need of drawing a blood sample. This bracelet will take a reading after every five minutes and in high blood glucose levels will prompt the insulin pump, a device that will be worn around the belt with a cannula going under the skin (covered by a patch) through which a dose of insulin in the amount required will be administered to return blood glucose levels to normal. In states of low blood glucose, it will alarm the patient via the Sukali app to take action so as to raise the sugar in one’s blood. The Sukali app will also store all the readings to be used by the doctor during the patients hospital visit.

This team is led by a young innovator, Julius Kyomya a clinical pharmacy post graduate student at Mbarara University of Science and Technology.

LOW COST AUTOMATED SLIDE STAINER TEAM 2023

Low Cost Automated Slide Stainer, a slide stainer that will ensure efficient and accurate slide staining procedures. This device will have the capacity to stain 30 slides in 25minutes and enable laboratory technologists to remotely program and monitor the procedures being performed thus telemedicine capability. The slide stainer will be designed to work on both Cytology and Histo-Pathology procedures and will be able to also work on rechargeable batteries enabling low resource health centers to carry out slide staining procedures . This team is led by Auma Eunice , a third year Biomedical Engineering student at Mbarara University of Science and Technology.

TOTO SAFE CARRIER CAP AWARDED TEAM 2022

Toto Safe Carrier is a modified baby carrier designed to safely transport very sick newborns and infants who need continual critical care during transport. This includes respiratory support, temperature regulation, safe positioning for life threatening emergencies and trauma.

The Toto safe carrier will have a detachable, cushioned and warm basinet, a 10 liter refillable oxygen cylinder, bCPAP and a foldable storage pouch. The device will have an aluminum frame for strength, wheels/ rollers for easy mobility and foldable joints for ease of transport.

This team led by by Dr. Ochora Moses (SHO, PEADS, MUST) a project lead and 4 years of experience in device development won a grant of US$5500 from CAMTech Uganda and will be working under the guidance of CAMTech Uganda’s Co-Creation Lab.

KANGA CARE CAP AWARDED TEAM 2022

Kanga Care is a double-layered carrier locally knitted using yarn. It embraces the Kangaroo skin- to -skin mother care technique of generating and maintaining warmth improving its efficiency. The position of the baby in the Kanga Care carrier improves on its breathing patterns, stimulates breast milk production and promotes mother-to-child bonding.

 It’s uniquely fitted with vital reading sensors for continuous monitoring of the baby’s body temperature, pulse rate, Oxygen saturation. The device then automatically relays information of the vital signs to the Kanga Care mobile application through a WIFI connection to a remote monitoring system managed by health workers.

Kanga Care was awarded U$5500 from CAMTech Uganda to support them to implement their activities under CAMTech Uganda Co-Creation Lab. This team is led by a young girl innovator, Comfort Ayikoru a final year medical Student from Mbarara University of Science and Technology.
